Sheriffmuir
The Sheriffmuir Doublet is a traditional piece of evening wear, worn with a kilt and with high collar and gauntlet cuffs. It was especially popular in the late-Victorian and Edwardian periods, then revived in the middle of the twentieth century. In the revival period it was worn with a large lace jabot, although nowadays it is increasingly it is worn with a necktie or rouche tie under the waistcoat. The Sheriffmuir can also take a shoulder plaid under the epaulette for even more formal occasions.
The name Sheriffmuir refers to the inconclusive and protracted battle in 1715 between the Jacobites under the Earl of Mar, and the Government forces under the Duke of Argyll.
